TBE722 - Brian Ellis - Ease Out 7"
Absolutely insane, top shelf Boogie cover version here. Star Creature's Tim Zawada taps Brian Ellis for another supreme collaboration giving us an incredible rendition of an all-time spaced-out Chicago post-disco grail. Ellis recreates the original with extreme accuracy in both the gear used and the feeling. It's almost confusing because Brian Ellis also appears credited on the original pressings label? Did dude travel back and forth in time to make both versions? This is cosmically-reclined smooth-stank boogie at it's a finest. Another absolute blast off on the always consistent Tugboat Editions imprint. NASA Certifiable.
SC7076 - Giovanni Damico - Fall In The Groove / Be Your Lover 7"
Supreme Italo-Boogie 2-sider 7"s - Double banger. Two fav's from the long out of print Fall In The Groove LP, Giovanni Damico is officially out of hiding and back in the moonlight with his Chicago label team Star Creature. Here we get another crack at 2020's. The A Side gives us a slice of Psychedelic Boogie that is continentally agnostic - hard to tell if this cut is from the future or something that belongs on Brand New Wayo Volume 2. The B Side hits us with an Afro-Italo smacker that's already been known to fill floors from Orange County to Lyon, Salerno to Berlin, Tokyo to Rio. Housed in a replica 7" Jacket and ready for trouble.
SC7088 - Introverted Funk - Tell You / Fan Out 7"
Star Creature is proud to introduce LA’s own Introverted Funk with their vinyl debut coming June 2025. The group has been making waves throughout Southern California and beyond over these past few years and are ready to make things physical.
The group formed in 2018 as a partnership between multi-instrumentalist and producer Daniel Valle with songwriter and vocalist Veronica Rosa. Driven by a shared love of vintage vinyl and the most intimate moments of music discovery, Introverted Funk was born from the idea that even introverts can have something to shout from the soul.
They’ve self-released a handful of singles over the past few years and have now teamed up with Chicago’s Star Creature record label blast off into the physical world. Label-head Tim Zawada shared “I’ve been following the group from afar on IG and Spotify since their first single but it felt totally cosmic last year when Aaron Frazier of Durand Jones and The Indica-tions reached out and provided an intro. They had been touring and opening for bands like The Altons, Sinceers, King Pari and 79.5 so we had a lot of mutuals between us. They were in Chicago last year and we got to hang out a bit and chop it up – then a few months ago I got a Zip file with some demos that just blew me away.”
The A Side was recorded to analog tape at Blac N Gold Studios in Whittier, California and features and array of vintage gear that gives it that authentic disco flavor: Juno 106, KORG PolySix; Sequential Take 5, ARP Odyssey, Rhodes, 80’s Japanese Strat, Sir Marcus’s Miller Bass V5. The band was inspired by the 70s Disco Funk of Rod Temperton as well as City Pop greats like Tatsuro Yamashita both in sound and feeling. This song is about finding your person and allowing yourself to be free and open with love and communication.
The B Side came to life after repeated sessions “fanning out” over their favorite LPs from Candido, Heatwave and Niles Rodgers. “We went into the studio and wrote and recorded this in one day – We wanted to put our modern spin on these classic funky, fun and energet-ic dance floor delights.” The attention to detail continues on this side as this one was rec-orded to 2” Tape at Moneycat Studios in Hawthorne, CA using an array of 70s studio gear plus an arsenal of vintage synths and other instruments.
Both sides mastered by Stones Throw engineer Jake Viator.
